Child & Youth Counselling

Growing up isn’t always easy. Children and teens face unique challenges as they navigate school, friendships, family relationships, emotions, and an increasingly complex world. While some struggles are a normal part of development, others can begin to affect a child’s confidence, behaviour, relationships, or overall well-being.

Counselling provides a safe, supportive space where young people can better understand their emotions, develop healthy coping skills, and build resilience.

My Approach

Every child is unique, and therapy should reflect that. I tailor sessions to each child’s age, developmental stage, personality, and individual needs. My approach is warm, engaging, and relationship-focused, creating an environment where children and youth feel safe, accepted, and understood.

Depending on the child’s age and goals, I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, play therapy, creative activities, mindfulness, and emotion regulation strategies. While younger children often communicate through play and creativity, older children and teens may benefit from more traditional talk therapy combined with practical coping skills.

I also believe parents and caregivers play an important role in the therapeutic process. When appropriate, I work collaboratively with families to provide education, practical strategies, and support that can strengthen relationships and help children thrive both at home and in their everyday lives.

Areas I Commonly Support

Child and youth counselling may be helpful for:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • School-related stress or avoidance

  • Emotional regulation and big feelings

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Low self-esteem and confidence

  • Friendship and social difficulties

  • Family changes, separation, or divorce

  • Grief and loss

  • Trauma and difficult life experiences

  • ADHD and ASD

  • Life transitions and adjustment

What to Expect

The first session is an opportunity to understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and goals for counselling. Depending on your child’s age, this may include time with both the caregiver and child together, as well as individual time with your child when appropriate.

Therapy moves at your child’s pace. Building trust takes time, and my priority is creating a safe relationship where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. Progress often happens gradually as children gain confidence, develop new skills, and begin applying them in everyday life.

Supporting the Whole Family

Children don’t grow in isolation, they grow within families, schools, and communities. Whenever appropriate, I work collaboratively with caregivers to help reinforce skills outside of therapy while respecting your child’s privacy and developmental needs.

Together, we can create a supportive environment that encourages lasting growth and positive change.
